An auto accident can happen to anyone, so it’s important to know the steps to take in case you’re in one. Whether it’s a small fender bender or a dangerous high-speed wreck, follow these steps below to be able to efficiently jump into action.
Identify Anyone Injured
Injuries can be serious even in a seemingly minor accident. Check on all parties involved and get help for anyone that needs it.
Call the Police
An officer will write a report on the accident, documenting all parties involved and their perspectives.
If Able, Move Cars to Side of the Road
If there is only minor damage to the vehicles, move them out of the way of traffic. If there is major damage, the police will assist direct traffic and call in the right people to move the vehicles.
Gather Information of Others
Get the names, addresses, and contact information of other drivers involved in the accident; an easy way to do this is to take a picture of their license. It may also be helpful to get the information of any witnesses.
Gather Car and Damage Information
Take pictures from multiple different angles of both cars and the damage to them. A video encompassing all the damage all around the car may be useful as well.
Note Location of Accident
You could make a sketch on some paper mapping out where you are or take pictures of street signs or landmarks nearby.
Do Not Admit Fault or Settle
Even if the accident seems to be completely your fault, do not admit to be fully at-fault. If the other driver offers to settle the claim or give you money for the damage on the scene, politely decline. It is best to let the insurance companies deliberate and reach a conclusion together. After all, that’s what they’re there for! You just need to stay consistent with your version of the accident.
Call Your Insurance Agent
Once you are done giving your report to the police and taking pictures, call your insurance agent. Your agent will be able to direct you to the claims number or report the claim for you and be your advocate throughout the claims process.
As always, call your agent if you have any questions or need anything! Don’t know who your agent is, or if they’re available for you? Give us a call, we’re happy to help you and be your personal insurance expert!
